Philip Lindey

Philip Lindey is a contemporary painter who works in the long shadow of the old-master narrative tradition, painting small theatrical scenes that hover between portrait and parable. A child holds a tea party in a stormy field; a startled official is dive-bombed by a magpie; a bearded thinker cups a glowing orb out of the dark. His oils on canvas are built up in patient earthy glazes — verdigris, bitumen, candle-flame gold — and his characters carry the wry compassion of someone who has spent a long time watching.

A bearded thinker cradles a small luminous orb in the dark, the light catching his furrowed brow and lifted hand — chiaroscuro lifted straight from the candlelit tradition.

Tea Party

A small girl in a white dress holds court at a tea party of stuffed animals beneath a turbulent, dark sky — a vivid red toadstool and a yellow pram lending the scene the strangeness of a half-remembered fairy tale.
